Six generations of master craftsmen have turned Hästens into a family company guided by dedication to the dream and pride in their craft. Beginning in 1839 in Sweden, Pehr Adolf Janson began this tradition by becoming an apprentice saddle maker and later a master saddle maker recognized by the King of Sweden in 1852. In addition to saddles, Pehr Adolf created horsehair mattresses. horse, establishing the foundations of excellence and luxury that define Hästens today. The family tradition continued with his son Per Thure, who adapted the business to new times, focusing on the manufacture of horsehair mattresses, seats and cushions with the arrival of the first automobiles in Sweden during the First World War.
Together with his son David, Per Thure expanded Hästens and in 1917 they focused on manufacturing beds. Paul, cousin and artist, designed the iconic horse logo, honoring the beginnings of saddle manufacturing. Despite the difficulties of the war, Per Thure traveled the world in search of the best raw materials, establishing the plant in Köping in 1924. In the 1940s, Hästens built the iconic building 'the Tivoli' with the architect Ralph Erskine . In 1952, Hästens received the title of Supplier to the Royal Household, reaffirming its commitment to quality and durability. Solveig Janson, daughter of David Janson, took on the role of operations manager in 1963, alongside her two sisters and her husband, Jan Ryde, who in 1978 designed the brand's iconic blue check print.
In 1988, Jan Ryde left his academic career to direct Hästens, also motivated by his future wife in Köping. In 1995, King Carl Gustaf XVI renewed Hästens as supplier to the Royal Household. In 1998, growing demand led to the expansion of the plant, again designed by Ralph Erskine. Currently, one of the four children of Jan Ryde and his wife has already joined the family business. What began as a small family business is now present in 45 countries in Europe, Asia and America, maintaining the tradition of quality and craftsmanship that defines Hästens.
